Petition Closed
The petition asking for designated clothing-optional recreation areas on public lands, where users could be at liberty to be nude without fear of legal prosecution or official harassment failed to attract the necessary signatures before the end of threshold period and has been removed from the "We the People" site.
On the final day, February 12, 2014, the petition
had received 3,039 signatures. Organizers are sincerely grateful to each person who took the time to consider and sign the petition. While we would have liked to have seen the petition meet the 100,000 signature goal and to have learned what policy makers had to say about the issue, it seems there simply was not enough support to make that happen.
Nude swimming, sunbathing, camping and hiking are common examples of clothing-optional recreational activities. Clothing-optional recreation is enjoyed by many people from all walks of life and the enjoyment of it does not require membership in any movement or lifestyle or a subscription to any philosophy.
Supporters of the petition will continue to advocate for the designation of additional portions of federally managed beaches and wilderness areas for clothing-optional recreation use. We consider the petition as a first step in the process of raising awareness and will look to new strategies in the hopes of achieving the goal of expanding clothing-optional access on public lands.
